Google plans new initiatives, roadshows on cybersecurity, and grants to improve internet safety in India.
Tech giant Google announced on Thursday new online safety efforts in India, including multi-city cybersecurity roadshows to upskill nearly 100,000 engineers and funding from Google.org to community organisations totalling USD $2 million with an emphasis on digital safety.
According to Google, these initiatives are intended to increase the nation’s digital economy’s overall capacity to fend against cyber threats.
The measures prioritise user awareness, cybersecurity skill development, and assistance for high-risk groups. Google announced these programmes at an event, saying it will organise cybersecurity roadshows in many cities to upskill almost 100,000 engineers, IT professionals, and startup founders nationwide.
In order to persuade internet users to adopt healthier habits for safer digital transactions, the business has unveiled a multilingual user awareness campaign, which will be sponsored by the IT ministry and Digital India Corporation. Additionally, it announced grants from Google.org in India for non-profit organisations, including Collective Good Foundation, Point Of View, and HelpAge India, totalling USD 2 million (roughly Rs 16 crore), focused on digital safety. These grants “will enable high-risk groups such as women, microentrepreneurs, seniors, and the LGBTQIA+ community to leverage the opportunity of the internet with safety and confidence.”
Speaking at the event, Sanjay Gupta, Vice President and Country Head, Google India, said, as India progresses towards becoming a truly digitally enabled economy, “it is critical that the opportunity of connectivity not come at the price of online safety, and we all come together to build a safer internet for millions of Indians”.
